Where does it stop being a hard seltzer? Or what still counts as hard seltzer?

May 16, 2022

In this post, we want to look a bit at the variations of hard seltzer. What still counts as hard seltzer, and where does an alcoholic beverage stop being one? Are we gradually facing a situation where increasingly bizarre new beverages are labeling themselves as hard seltzer to profit from a hype? We’ll let our imagination run wild.

We are purists and we love the original. That is why Sparklys Hard Seltzer will remain faithful to the original zeitgeist. Especially in the U.S. market, which sets the pace globally, products are increasingly moving away from what hard seltzer actually is in order to remain interesting to customers. Large manufacturers and market researchers assume that the latter have the attention span of goldfish. A deluge of competitors is increasingly committing itself to a new competition: who can bring the most bizarre seltzers to market. Curiosities such as: coconut water, rosé seltzer, vodka soda, or iced tea. Somehow, it all sounds less like hard seltzer and more like all those mixed drinks that nobody would give a damn about if they weren't labeled "hard," "spiked," or some other kind of seltzer. Does everything nowadays have to be innovated to death until you can barely recognize it anymore? Is it the curse of postmodernism that turns everything into a parody of itself? Why are the mad scientists of the competition breeding all these Frankensteins? And what comes next? Cheese fondue, green curry, or shrimp cocktail? Some might argue that those wouldn't be vegan anymore. We say that even those flavors can somehow be imitated with plant-based ingredients! What other abominations from hell lie in store for us? Don't get us wrong—we are adventurous. But we want to stay true to our brand and the product. In that sense, you can count on further innovations from us: almost every fruit that nature provides is imaginable. (Even banana—sorry, Luca Fortuna—it would be the worst nightmare for our specialist on TikTok). Whether grapefruit, cherry, pomegranate, blackberry, or just about any other berry. In our opinion, everything would harmonize well with our seltz. Damn—even hard seltzer with a beer or wine flavor sounds comparatively drinkable. But coconut water or iced tea? Come effin’ on! How can a supposed novelty sound so boring?

Do you love the original as much as we do and refuse to let something old be sold to you as something new? Then order the original zeitgeist right now here in our shop.
